In October 2023, the price of fresh seafood experienced a decline, while frozen seafood saw a slight increase of 1.3% compared to the same period last year but remained below the average level.
Inflation continues to impact grocery stores, where the average prices increased by 2.5% in October 2023. However, consumers are reducing their shopping frequency. 83% of shoppers have altered their grocery shopping habits, with 55% focusing on essential products and 45% cutting back on non-essential items.
The sales of frozen food have returned to pre-pandemic levels. Specifically, processed meat increased by 4%, and potatoes/onions increased by 3% compared to the same period last year. Consumers still prefer dining at home.
However, in October 2023, certain seafood types deviated from the overall inflation trend, including canned and bagged tuna, which reached 145 million USD, marking a 13% increase; mackerel increased by 10% compared to the same period, and the sales value of 2-piece shellfish decreased by nearly 13% compared to the same period last year.
